No Mandate for NDP-Liberal-Separatist Coalition

On October 14, 2008 Canadians rendered a clear judgment in the Federal Election.

Stephen Harper and the Conservatives promised strong, certain leadership to protect Canada’s future in a time of unprecedented turmoil.

Canadians passed judgment on Stephen Harper when they awarded the Conservative Party a strengthened mandate.

In the same election Stéphane Dion and the Liberals promised a massive new carbon tax that would strangle Canada’s economy.

Canadians passed judgment on the Stéphane Dion and the Liberals who received their lowest public support since Confederation.

In the same election voters passed judgment on Jack Layton and the NDP who once again peddled and outdated socialist ideology and put thousands of jobs at risk by driving up taxes by tens of billions of dollars.

Canadians passed judgment on Jack Layton and the NDP who were relegated to a distant fourth in the House of Commons.

Voters offered no mandate to Stéphane Dion and the Liberals to govern the country.  They offered no mandate to Jack Layton and the NDP to influence the economy.

Voters offered no mandate for the Liberals and NDP to form a coalition government – and in fact, the Liberals ran against such an arrangement.

Oct. 14th election – A choice between certainty and risk

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has called a federal election for October 14.  Our candidate, Heather Jewell, is ready to hit the campaign trail in St. Paul’s.

Now is not the time to gamble on Stéphane Dion’s “work-in-progress” carbon tax.

Following his meeting with Her Excellency, the Governor-General, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the next election will be a choice between certainty and risk at a time when the world’s economy has entered a period of instability.

“Between now and October 14th, Canadians will choose a Government to look out for their interests at a time of global economic trouble.  They will choose between direction or uncertainty; between common sense or risky experiments; between steadiness or recklessness,” said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister said Parliament needs a new mandate.

“For two and half years, we’ve proven that minority government can work,” said the Prime Minister.  “We’ve stuck to our principles, delivered on our commitments and demonstrated an ability to bring about consensus on big national issues that transcend party lines.  But now we have come to a moment that requires the people of Canada to choose the way forward.”

The Prime Minister said now is not the time to gamble on Stéphane Dion’s carbon tax.

“The opposition insists on large-scale spending and a new tax.  But even they admit that their carbon tax proposal is a work-in-progress,” said the Prime Minister.  “This tax will tack a cost on to every expenditure every family and every business makes.  And it will do so for one purpose and one purpose only: to pay for spending promises the country cannot afford at the worst possible time.”

The Prime Minister pledged his commitment to continue delivering steady leadership for Canadians:

“Over the coming weeks, my colleagues and I will talk about what we are doing and where we are headed,” said the Prime Minister.  “Our plans to preserve for seniors the opportunity live out their golden years with the financial security and health care they expect, to ensure our streets are safe, our borders are secure and our sovereignty protected and to ensure that our country remains united, strong and free.”

Prime Minister Harper Receives International Human Rights Award

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today became the first Canadian to receive the B’nai Brith International President’s Gold Medallion, in recognition of the Government’s efforts to fight discrimination and uphold human rights in Canada and around the world. The Prime Minister received the award at B’nai Brith International’s Board of Governors meetings, held in conjunction with the B’nai Brith Canada annual Policy Conference, the first time such a joint meeting has been held outside the United States.

“The award of the Gold Medallion generously acknowledges that the actions of our Government are guided by the principle that hate and discrimination have no place in a civilized society,” Prime Minister Harper said. “It’s a special honour to be so recognized by one of the world’s largest and oldest human rights organizations.”

Previous recipients of the Gold Medallion include United States’ Presidents Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower and John F.  Kennedy, as well as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Israeli Prime Ministers David Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir.

In presenting Prime Minister Harper with the award, B’nai Brith International President Moishe Smith, a resident of Ottawa who is the first non-American president of the organization, cited a number of actions the Prime Minister and the Government have taken to advance human rights and oppose discrimination, including:

  • Unequivocally supporting Canada’s role in the UN-sanctioned mission in Afghanistan;
  • Refusing to sign a resolution denouncing Israel’s right to self-defence at the 2006 Francophonie Summit;
  • Suspending relations with the then Hamas-led government in Palestine, for its refusal to renounce terrorism; and
  • Delivering a heartfelt apology acknowledging the overtly discriminatory Indian Residential Schools program.

“Prime Minister, whether in opposition or in government, you have always portrayed a leadership style that speaks of principle and honesty,” said Mr. Smith. “Our decision to award you the Gold Medallion reflects the esteem the world Jewish community holds for you.”
